I have known of them for several years, but never took the opportunity to experience one for myself until May of 2008. Since then? I was hooked. I love the quiet, warm and work-friendly atmosphere that Panera Bread provides. It’s neat to experience a little restaurant/cafe that offers high-backed booths, cushy seating and outlets stationed at most of the tables and booths so that people can work and play on their laptops while they have lunch or just enjoy a mid-afternoon snack.

The big draw for me, obviously, is the free wifi. There’s no pesky login card to have to obtain or a minimum purchase requirement. Simply set up, connect to the unsecured (tip: make sure you set your network location to public, or have your firewall up its security standards for the unsecured network!) network, load up your browser and click the “Login” button on Panera’s local network homepage, and you’re good to go.

I will admit that the food is a little pricey ($1.69 for an itty bitty bottle of water? $2 for a cookie? C’mon!), but the serene atmosphere and uninterrupted work environment is well worth the expense. Whether you’re there to look up baby gift baskets or browse eBay, you’re definitely in your element!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

I contacted Subway via subway.com, detailing what had happened, including a link to the photo posted in this entry, and left my contact information. I also blogged about it.

I never heard back from anyone.

So they’re essentially condoning employees ripping off Subway customers?

I have picked up Subway two times since, and have made sure to watch the employees closely, and check on the soup before leaving the store.

On Tuesday, November 4th, 2008, immediately after voting, my husband and I drove to a local Subway to pick up subs. He waited in the car with our kids while I went in and placed a to-go order. Our order consisted of one foot long roast beef (for hubby), one six inch chicken, bacon and ranch (for me), one cup of cream of potato/broccoli/cheese soup (for me), and three chocolate chip cookies (for our kids). The subs were prepared in front of me, but the soup was obtained while I was at the cash register, which was at the other end of the counter (a good ten feet away from where the Subway employee was getting my soup).

I got home and discovered just how much soup the Subway employee had given me:

Funny, that doesn’t look anywhere near the amount of soup I got when I ordered soup a few weeks ago, nor does it represent the amount of soup shown in the following Subway sign:

If it weren’t for the fact that my husband had to go to work, my kids were napping and I had work to do, I would have immediately gone back to the store right then and there. Instead, I ate my sub, the four or five spoonfuls worth of soup, and now plan on submitting a complaint via Subway’s website, subway.com.

Tonight a friend offered to pick up dinner at Pizza Hut if we called it in. I didn’t feel like calling up a local store and trying to place an articulate order over the phone with squealy toddlers in the background, so I headed to pizzahut.com to place an online order.

Ordering online was quite easy. Food is broken down into logical categories — build your pizza, specialty pizzas, appetizers, beverages, desserts, sides, pastas, p’zones and featured products and specialty pizzas. Each page shows images of the item as well as a description, and when you pick out what you want you’re taken to a page that allows you to customize that particular item. A pizza, for example, will allow you to pick the crust, the cheese, toppings and how you want to have them (on the whole pizza, half of the pizza, a quarter of the pizza, twice the toppings, etc.).

Checking out is easy too. No credit card is required; simply select how you’ll be paying in the store, finalize and submit the order, and then the website spits out an estimate of when your order will be ready (in our case, I ordered at 7:01pm and was told it would be ready at 7:16pm).

Our friend picked up our food and brought it over, and everything was just as we ordered it.
