I spotted Betty Crocker Mac and Cheese a few weeks ago, while at Walmart, and since it was only $1.00 and it had a Box Tops for Education label on it, I decided to pick up a box. Generally we use Kraft or its generic version whenever serving up some macaroni & cheese for our kids, but I’m all for trying new things.
Betty Crocker Mac and Cheese is a little different than the “standard” boxed macaroni and cheese for two reasons:
- Rather than boiling the pasta until it’s ready and then adding the powdered cheese with the specified amount of butter and milk, Betty Crocker Mac and Cheese specifies that everything be boiled together, then left to simmer until the initial liquid has thickened
- The finished product tastes much more creamy and “homestyle”, more like the oven-baked casserole varieties
I personally liked Betty Crocker Mac and Cheese. It was easy to cook (once I figured out that everything gets cooked together, much like Rice-a-Roni or Pasta Sides), and it looked, felt, and tasted delicious. However, if your kids are anything like mine, then they may be too used to the box-tasting macaroni and cheese to really like this one.

My friend Amanda’s son won’t eat anything but the Betty Crocker Macaroni & Cheese. I think it is neat that it comes in Cheese Pizza flavor, giving it something more than just the old cheese flavor.
