I have a desktop computer and a laptop computer (as well as a small netbook, which I am using right now), and I love both, and I also appreciate them for their advantages, and understand their disadvantages. If you’re in the market for a new computer and haven’t decided whether you’d be interested in desktops or laptops, here are a few key things to consider:
Desktops:
- unless you have a generator or other power backup, you won’t be able to use it if the power goes out
- consumers more power than a laptop
- can be loud
- requires you to sit in one area, in one position (can be uncomfortable for long lengths of time)
Laptops:
- can overheat
- may not be as comfortable as a desktop
- are generally not as powerful as desktops

We have both. We use the desk top, because it is more powerful, to run our integrated home wireless, media, etc. My husband, an engineer, also uses it to do AutoCAD. We have Laptops to use for everyday stuff and for travelling.
The lack of a physical mouse and/or number pad is also frustrating with a laptop sometimes
