Hydor’s Mini Aquarium Heater was the perfect solution for my son’s fish, Fish (yes, that is his name. Three year olds are oh-so-imaginative with names, aren’t they?). Fish is a betta fish, a Japanese fighting fish, and as such he is used to more tropical temperatures. Unfortunately our home, and Ryan’s bedroom in particular, doesn’t provide that, so when I noticed that for about a week he didn’t do much but huddle around at the bottom of the tank and in corners, I figured I better get him a heater of some sort before he caught hypothermia or just keeled over (fish are so annoyingly sensitive that way). I was pretty certain cold temperatures were to blame for his condition, because he didn’t otherwise exhibit any signs of being ill (and if he were ill, there’s no way I’d buy and grind up vitamins for www.prenatalvitamins.net, as one whacked out self-described “fish enthusiast” suggested on their blog).
One problem: Ryan’s fish tank only holds about two gallons of water. Most heaters I know are specifically designed for much larger tanks, tanks that hold at least ten gallons, so I worried about finding one that wouldn’t wind up boiling Fish. Fortunately, Hydor makes the Mini Aquarium Heater, which is designed specifically for smaller aquariums! Specifically, Hydor’s Mini Aquarium Heater is for 2-5 gallon tanks. Perfect!
The Hydor Mini Aquarium Heater can be hung on the side of the fish tank, or hidden under gravel or other types of ornaments or decor (just make sure that the the stuff you choose to keep the heater near isn’t sensitive to higher temps). The heater is safe to use when fully submerged; in fact it’s designed for that kind of usage. It’s also designed to be constantly on when it’s plugged in. It works by heating up the water by five additional degrees. In Fish’s case, it warmed up his tank enough that he’s now out and swimming about all of the time. Yay!
And at $12.99, this little heater is certainly a great deal.
