Another essential for my HP Mini 311 — and for all netbooks — is an external optical drive. I could have made do with a standard external CD/DVD drive for fifty bucks or so, but I also know that there probably will come a time when I’ll want to burn a disc from my netbook, and wouldn’t it be a pain in the butt if I couldn’t? So I made up my mind to go ahead and purchase a more expensive external optical drive that could not only read, but record. Luckily for me, Best Buy had the LG Super-Multi Portable Slim Rewriter marked down to $58! I was quite excited over that, almost as excited as when Dan and I went shopping for womens and mens tungsten wedding bands!
The LG Super-Multi Portable Slim Rewriter connects to computers via USB, and requires no external power (though if for some reason one USB port can’t provide enough power, there is a secondary USB cable attached to the drive which can be plugged into a second USB port) to work — it draws everything from the computer.
It reads CDs and DVDs, and burns CDs at 24x and DVD+R discs at a nice 8x speed. The optical drive also offers LightScribe direct disc labeling (something I didn’t realize until now, since it wasn’t a feature I was interested in).
In terms of size, the LG Super-Multi Portable Slim Rewriter is definitely slim! It’s amazingly lightweight — so lightweight, in fact, that when I first picked it up I wondered if it would be up to the task of reading and writing discs. But so far it has performed flawlessly. I haven’t had the chance to test out its LightScribe capabilities, but I have used the drive to install Windows 7 and several software programs on my netbook, and it’s definitely up to speed. It also burns basic data to blank DVD+Rs quickly, and never seems to get overly loud or hot.
There is one thing I don’t like about the LG Super-Multi Portable Slim Rewriter, and that’s the design of it. To be more specific, the finish. Glossy black finish on an item that is going to be frequently handled is never a good idea! But that’s just an issue with the design, which obviously doesn’t impact the function!
Bottom line? I’d definitely recommend the LG Super-Multi Portable Slim Rewriter as a basic external optical drive to have for use with your netbook!
