Clear Care

1

Exactly one month ago I blogged about Clear Care. Clear Care is a contact lens solution that uses hydrogen peroxide to clean and disinfect contact lenses. The solution works by using a metal gear (located at the bottom of the special grated container that holds the contact lenses) that interacts with the 3% hydrogen peroxide solution and subsequently creates vigorous bubbling activity for a good amount of time. Note: the presence of hydrogen peroxide in the solution means it’s a lot like acnezine; it’s something you definitely don’t want to get into your eyes!

So, my thoughts on Clear Care. First, I was able to use the product with my old contact lens prescription, which was for Bausch & Lomb PureVision. I was having a lot of trouble with protein deposits on those contacts, even with daily rinsing, rubbing and storage in a protein-removing contact lens solution, and the switch to Clear Care did make an amazing difference. Then those contacts ripped, and I got a new prescription and switched to Acuvue Oasys (you can read my review on them here).
Clear Care has been just as amazing with the new contacts. I’m careful to remove any makeup I’m wearing and wash my hands before removing my contacts, but the occasional piece of glitter or debris gets on my contacts, and the five second pre-rinse and then the six hour soak in the Clear Care solution effectively removes EVERYTHING. Every morning my contacts are crystal-clear, and I never have to take them out to remove stray piece of dirt that an overnight soaking missed. I’m so happy!

The only disadvantage I can think of in terms of Clear Care, besides the increased cost (but I’ll gladly pay more for contact lens solution if it means keeping my contact lenses in good condition for their lifespan — and then some!), is that the hydrogen peroxide can cause eye irritation. The instructions specifically say that the contacts must be left to soak for at least six hours. On one occasion I only had about four and a half hours of sleep, so I had to rinse the contacts with a standard contact lens cleaning solution. Even then, my eyes burned after the initial application. But I suppose that would be categorized as a “user error”, and thus doesn’t detract from Clear Care itself!
