In September I purchased a Pug puppy. Before I got her (her name is Leah, by the way) I did a lot of reading and research on housebreaking. One thing that came up time and time again is to restrict access to large, unsupervised areas. Well, I definitely consider my living room to be a large area that is often unsupervised, especially when we’re out, and when we’re asleep. I know that with a puppy comes accidents, so keeping Leah off of the carpet was a definite must.
Unfortunately, our kitchen opens right up onto our living room. So my husband and I looked around for ways to keep Leah in the kitchen, and out of the living room and subsequently the rest of the house. The answer was a lot easier than I thought: electronic fencing. Baby gates wouldn’t be feasible, and having a fence that runs the entire width of the living room would be cumbersome and annoying, especially with two small children added into the mix.
Searching the internet for electronic indoor pet fencing let me to the Innotek Instant Pet Barrier. The system is incredibly easy to configure, because there are no wires and no cords. Instead, you have a “zone”, which is about the size of a smoke detector and looks just like one, to place anywhere where you don’t want your dog to be. The zone can be adjusted to give off warning beeps and electronic shocks up to six feet away — the system works in a diameter shape. The other part of the system is the collar, which the dog wears.
The product works beautifully. The minimum setting protects two feet in every direction (diameter), and the maximum setting protects six feet in every direction. Due to the width of our living room, we had to purchase a second “zone”, and together both zones keep Leah out of the living room and in the kitchen.
As far as the shock itself, I tested it on myself, and it’s not unlike getting zapped in the winter time as a result of built up static electricity. Fortunately for the dog, the shock is not instant. There are warning beeps, which speed up before the collar releases a zap to the animal.
We have been using the Innotek Instant Pet Barrier since mid-September, and have had no problems with the product.
