I have had a laptop since February 14th, 2006. Between then and now I have had to replace my mouse at least four times. It wasn’t that the mouse I had at any given time suddenly quit working. No, the demise and the resulting replacement of each mouse was caused by irreparable damage done to the receiver — the little USB “dongle” that plugs into the USB port. I had my most recent mouse a little over seven weeks when my son ran into the tray my laptop was on, which caused it to slide off, hit the floor and break apart the mouse receiver that was plugged into one of the USB ports. No damage was done to the laptop, thankfully. I may be irritated over having to replace a $40 mouse, but I would cry if I had to repair or replace an $800 laptop!
So last week I went mouse shopping, and as soon as I spotted the Logitech V550 Nano Cordless Laser Mouse, I knew I had to have it. Why? Take a look at the size of the USB dongle:
When plugged in, the dongle extends outwards no more than a half inch. That’s quite the improvement over the typical USB mouse dongle, which might be two to three inches in length! And so far, so good. Logitech’s teensy, tiny little receiver is plugged in, and I can leave it there, and not worry about it getting pushed on or snapped off.
The mouse itself is also very nice. I love that is it relatively flat. Many notebook or “mini” mice are just as curved as a standard sized mouse. This is bad when you have a smaller mouse, because you really have to arch your hand up in order to curve your hand around the mouse. After several hours of continuous use, being forced to hold your hand in such a fashion around a small mouse can be quite uncomfortable.
The Logitech mouse is also very fast, very smooth, and very precise. I’m loving the hyper scroll wheel, and the buttons work very nicely.

I think I want to buy this.
