I have two Persian cats. One of them has soft, cottony fur that mats and knots very easily, despite frequent brushing. A perfect example of how bad it can be is the fact that I had to cut a knot off of him just this week. He was shaved down less than a month ago!
Anyway, I have heard good reviews about the FURminator, so when I saw the FURminator for cats (the reviews I had read were from dog owners and dog groomers), I decided to buy. At $34.99, I was a bit hesitant, but when I thought of the money I’d save since I would hopefully no longer have to drop $50 two to three times per year for a professional shave at the groomer’s, I ultimately purchased it.
And ultimately, I was disappointed. The FURminator (for cats and dogs) is designed to remove the undercoat of the fur, which will lessen the amount of fur that gets shed around the house, and help prevent mats and knots. Well, despite my Persian having a perfectly brushed coat, the FURminator for cats would drag and snag, and I’d have to keep pulling it away with two hands in order to get it away from the fur and remove the snags. After ten minutes of attempting to brush out my Persian in this manner, I gave up, washed off the comb, put it back in the package, and the next day returned it to the store.
My thoughts on the product? A waste of money. It was infuriating to use!

I’ve noted that those types of grooming tools are often difficult, if not impossible to use. I had a similar situation with a “professional” dematting blade – it didn’t take any mats off at all!
very nice & interesting . good luck .
Hmm. That’s really strange. I got the Furminator for both my cats (one is short-haired, the other medium-haired) and it worked just fine. Perhaps it was the long hair. *shrugs*
I think it is the long hair that doesn’t work. I have a short hair cat, and the furminator works perfectly. But I have heard stories from those with long hair cats that won’t work. good thing you could return it.
Thankyou so much! I was just about to buy it & then I came across your comments. I have a black and grey long haired persian cat & i just can’t seem to find the right brush for my cat that takes the least amount of effort & pain for the both of us.
