I am having hair woes. My hair has always been naturally thick and somewhat coarse (or, as my mother calls it, “horsey hair!”). I began coloring my hair various shades of red, purple, and deep brown since I was fourteen years old, with the occasional blond streak here and there. By last July, I had enough of coloring my hair every month or two, and resolved to let my natural hair color grow out.
And it has been growing out since July. But I have a big problem, and it isn’t my two-toned (deep brown naturally, the colored mess being a slightly brassy, orangey-brown) hair. It’s the health of my hair. For years I have had to purchase deeply moisturizing shampoos and conditioners for my sadly abused hair, or else I wouldn’t be able to get a brush through my hair.
But suddenly I had natural hair coming in… natural hair that would get incredibly slick and greasy within 12 hours of being shampooed and conditioned with Dove Advanced Care.
So here I am, with about 60% of my hair length consisting of dry, damaged hair that needs to be shampooed and conditioned with moisturizing shampoos and conditioners. But the rest? A standard shampoo and conditioner works just fine. So what’s a girl to do? Run around with slick hair, or run around with tangled, matted, coarse, un-brushable hair? Any suggestions?
